Some Dog Training Stuff

I wanted to write a little about dog training and some of the methods I've found work best for me.
When I was in elementary school, every morning before my dad dropped me off I would watch this show that I found called It’s Me or The Dog. This show introduced me to the training techniques that I now use with Hershey. The trainer in that show, Victoria Stillwell, uses positive reinforcement methods. I just love the fact that I can get my dog to not only do what I ask, but also enjoy doing what I ask of him.
I never have and never will use choke, prong, or electric collars on him because, in my opinion those don’t always work and if there’s a safer way to train my dog to do the things those devices claim to train then why wouldn't I choose the safer option? Positive training allows you to get to the root of the behavior problems. I could talk all day about how much I love positive reinforcement training but since I’m not professional trainer I’ll leave it there for now.

Some tools that I do use are a clicker and a no pull harness.
First the clicker; the clicker is used to mark the desirable action or behavior that you want to train your dog to do. There are a lot of studies out there that show a click is more effective than just saying good dog or good boy. Although there’s nothing wrong with saying those things, I’ve found the clicker to be faster when training Hershey. For example, I wanted to teach Hershey to play dead. In my version, I first tell Hershey to “put em’ up” then he puts his front paws in the air. Next I say “bang bang” and he falls to the ground.
A demonstration of this trick, sorry for the blurriness, I took it on my phone:
When I first started teaching him this trick I didn't think the clicker was all that important. However I ran into a problem. Since the trick really has two tricks combined into one, Hershey was putting both together in his head. Instead of waiting for my queue to fall down “dead” he would put his paws up in the air and fall down right away. Using the clicker I was able to separate each action or trick by marking them. He then learned that he had to wait until I said “bang bang” to fall down.

As for the no pull harness, there are a ton of options to choose from when it comes to no pull harnesses. I use this one. I don’t use it all the time because Hershey usually knows not to pull but I do use it when running, when I don’t want to worry about him pulling, and when I’m trying to work with him on other behaviors. It just gives me a little more control. Right now, for example, I’m working with Hershey on his leash reactivity; he likes to lunge and bark at other dogs when we are passing because he gets super excited and wants to play. Using the harness gives me more control to catch the action before it happens and train him what I’d like him to do when passing other dogs.

Also, if you’re looking for a good book about training your dog I’d really recommend this one and this one by Victoria Stillwell. This isn't sponsored; I just really love her books and methods.

And lastly, a pic of Hershey doing one of my favorite tricks, high five;

Have a great day!

Dog Supplies

It was finally cold enough for Hershey to try out his new hoodie the other day. It’s sad how I get more excited buying him new things then I do buying myself things. Just part of being a crazy dog owner I guess.

Another dog related thing. I’ve just recently started making more dog supplies for Hershey. About a year ago I made him a dog bed. I love the design, it’s made like a pillow so it was super easy and then I made a cover to go over it. So to clean it, all I have to do it wash the cover. The old cover was falling apart a little bit so I decided to make two new covers for the winter. The bottoms of the covers (or pillow cases as I call them) have overlapping pieces so there is no need for any Velcro or zippers to hold the case together. I’ve found that this is much easier when it comes to washing and taking the covers off.
Here’s one of the covers, I think Hershey likes it. J

I also made him a new collar. He’s stylin’ now.

I decided to start making more of his supplies because I just wasn’t finding what I wanted for the price I wanted. Either I didn’t like the look or design or I really liked the design but it was crazy expensive. Making his things allows me to make it how I want with the design I want and an added bonus is that no one else has those things because they are custom made by me.

And a random picture…I found this the other day when I was going through old pictures. I have no idea what he was doing.

Sorry about the crazy amount of Hershey pictures in this post. I kind of love him ;-P

Have a great Tuesday. Look for a new page to my blog on Thursday!

Rim Rock Marathon

This past weekend my mom and I ran the Rim Rock marathon.

It was a gorgeous race. I would definitely do it again. The first 13.1 miles were gradually uphill for the most part and the last 13.1 were downhill. Before the marathon I thought; “half downhill! That’s going to be easy!” It wasn’t! What I failed to realize was that after going uphill 13.1, going downhill is the last thing that your legs want. It is painful!! But I survived and even got a PR! My final time was 4:32:11. I know that isn’t an amazing time but since it’s only my second marathon I’ll take it. Especially since my first marathon was around 4:49 so I’m happy with 4:32.

At mile 3 I felt really good. I was surprised I felt that good because we were going uphill. Around mile 6 I was getting a little tiered but I just kept telling myself that I was almost halfway done with the uphill part of the race. I didn’t eat anything until around mile 8, I wasn’t too tiered but I wanted to give myself some energy to push to the halfway point. At mile 13.1 I had mixed feelings. I was so happy to be done with the uphill portion but at the same time I just wanted to be done. The marathon also had a relay so the other half of the relay runners started at mile 13. Seeing the runners who had been waiting the whole time I’d been going uphill start out strong made me a little weak but it helped me push myself even more! Mile 17 was when I really started feeling it. I was thinking that there was no way I was going to make it another 9 miles, even if it was downhill. My legs were really hurting because of the constant downhill. I had to just focus on my music and stop thinking about the pain. My music stopped playing around mile 20 and I decided to keep it off. I wanted to see how far I could keep pushing myself without the music. It was at this point in the race that I had to yell at myself a couple times. I kept thinking, “I can’t do it.” “I’m too tiered.” I had to yell at myself; “I can do it, think positive, just keep running!” It made me really realize how important positive thinking is, not just in running, but in life. We can accomplish so much more than we think if we just think positively. Anyway, back to the race. At mile 24 there was a small uphill and after it I had to walk a little. I really wanted to finish strong so I let myself walk for a minute. Close to the finish was when I saw my dad waiting and cheering me on. That really helped and gave me to push to finish. At the end I was so happy to be done and be able to stop running.
My mom finished about two minutes after me. I’m so happy for her! It was her first marathon!
Anyway, so that was the race. As I said before, the views in this race were incredible!

And unrelated to the marathon but too cute not to share, this happened while I was writing this post. I guess my foot is really comfortable!

Have a great rest of your day!

What is the point of this blog?

But first, a picture of my main man and his friend Summit. J

The question in the title of this blog post is something I have really been thinking about lately. What is the point of my blog? I’m not 100% sure what the answer to that question is yet but please bear with me while I figure it out.
At first I started this blog to help give me some motivation to train for my first marathon. I really enjoyed writing and posting about what I was doing while training. When my marathon was over, I stopped posting for a while and thought about whether or not to continue with the blog. I’m happy to say that I’ve decided to continue posting. I love to write about the things I am passionate about and blogging is a perfect opportunity for me to do that.  So in part, the purpose of my blog is to write about my two of my favorite passions (dogs and running). Sometimes my post’s will be all about dogs, sometimes they will be all about running, or maybe sometimes they will just be about random things that I have on my mind! Who knows?! That’s the beauty of having your own blog right? J
Thank you for listening to that small but confusing rant. As you can most definitely tell I am not a great or experienced blogger and my ideas are very jumbled and disorganized. However, I’m hoping some experience will help. So if you’d like to continue reading my blog, thank you, I’d love to have you and I promise to always have cute pictures of dogs no matter how bad my writing is. :-P
Oh and just so anyone reading this knows. I don’t have a ton of time so I can’t guarantee that I’ll post something every day but I’ll try to get something written at least once a week. Thanks again and I hope you have a great rest of your day!
